FAQs
What is an air source heat pump?
An air source heat pump is a renweable heating system that extracts air from the outside, which in turn warms a refrigerant by being placed under high pressure to increase the temperature, this is then used to warm your home and hot water. An air source heat pumps works in cold weather and is much more efficient than traditional gas or electric boilers.
Would my home suitable?
Most home are suitable - the ideal property has good insulation and enough space for the unit to outdoors. We can assess your home in a free survey to confirm whether an air source heat pump is right for you.
What is involved?
The installation includes a survey of your property, sizing the system to meet your heating needs, fitting the outdoor unit and indoor components and connecting it to your heating system. This takes 1 to 3 days depending on your home's layout.
Do I need to upgrade my radiators?
You may need to upgrade your radiators or install larger ones as heat pumps operate at a lower flow temperature than traditional boilers. During your survey we can advise if radiator changes are recommended.
Is it environmentally friendly?
Yes! Air source heat pumps are renewable because they use heat from the air and produce much lower carbon emissions than other traditional methods - they can significantly reduce your environmental impact.
What happens during installation?
1. Initial survey and system design.
2. Positioning and installation of the outdoor unit.
3. Connection to indoor heating and hot water components.
4. System testing and handover, including how to use and maintain your new heat pump.
Do they make noise?
Air source heat pumps are designed to operate quietly. The outdoor units produce some sound, similar to a refrigerator, this is usually not noticeable inside the home.
What does maintenance involve?
Routine maintenance is simple and usually yearly - this involves checking refrigerant levels, filters and performance. A maintenance agreement can be provided for peace of mind.
Do I need to change my electric tariff and meter?
Not always, but switching to a time-of-use tariff can help you to reduce running costs. In some cases a smart meter or dual rate tariff may be recommended. During your free survey we can advise which would be best suited.
How much does it cost?
The cost varies depending on the size of your home and system requirements. After your survey we will provide a transparent quote with no hidden fees.
What are the running costs?
Running costs will depend on your current energy prices, home insulation and usage. Air source heat pumps are highly efficient so you can expect lower heating bills compared to traditional systems like electric or gas.
Do you need planning permission?
Air source heat pumps are classified as permitted development - meaning planning permission is not required. However, listed buildings and certain conservation areas can have restrictions. We can check this for you in your free home survey.
