What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government initiative designed to support the decarbonisation of heating in buildings across England and Wales. It provides upfront capital grants, also known as heat pump grants, to help homeowners and non-domestic building owners switch to efficient, low-carbon heating solutions such as air source heat pumps.

Recent Changes to Heat Pump Grants:

On 21 September 2023, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero issued a notice to increase the BUS grant level for air source heat pumps.

From 23 October 2023, installers can apply for the new grant amount:

Air Source Heat Pumps: £7,500

Voucher applications submitted on or after this date will receive the increased grant, provided they meet BUS eligibility criteria and are successfully redeemed within the voucher’s validity period.

Any vouchers issued before the change will still be redeemable at the value stated on the original voucher, both before and after 23 October 2023.

Who Can Apply for Heat Pump Grants?

Installations commissioned from 1 April 2022 are eligible to apply for a Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant.

If your installation was completed before the grant level increase, you can still apply for the new £7,500 heat pump grant as long as your application is submitted on or after 23 October 2023.

Funding Availability

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme has a total of £450 million in grant funding available over three years (2022–2025), helping more homes and buildings switch to greener, more efficient heating solutions.

By applying for a heat pump grant, you can significantly reduce the upfront cost of installing an air source heat pump, making sustainable heating affordable and accessible.
